1986 Introduced the Ford Mustang to Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) with a speed density air metering system,
true dual exhaust, but with a more restrictive head design and forged flat top pistons with a compression ratio of
9.2:1, and out back the Mustang was fitted with the sturdier 8.8 inch rear.
Torque increased in 1986, and was the last year of the four head-light design.
Magazine road tests proved that the 1986 IROC-Z Camaro was no match for
the 1986 Mustang GT on the streets and on the dragstrips, and was most likely
the reason GM offered the 5.7L 350ci Corvette engine in the Camaro and Firebird
in the following year, 1987...

1987 had a new look with new front (aero) nose and head-lights, tail-lights, rear spoiler and ground effects and
a completely new interior design. The more restrictive '86 (high swirl) heads were replaced with the E7 truck
heads and bigger throttle body and upper H.O intake plenum was added to increase HP by 25. An air silencer
was placed upstream from the filter at the cost of a couple HP.  Compression ratio was 9.0:1. and the '87
Mustangs were treated to bigger front disc brakes.
Popular magazine road test articles showed the 1987 5.0L
302ci Mustang GT and the new release of the 1987 5.7L 350ci IROC-Z Camaro running the same 1/4 mile
times...

1988 the speed Density systems were replaced by the "smarter" Mass Air metering in California cars only. This
improved drivability, emissions, and fuel economy, but with a slight drop in HP. Mass Air has better flexibility for
moderate to large HP upgrades because the computer can adjust to modifications. Many have claimed that
stock for stock, the 1987-88 Speed Density Mustangs were the faster production 5.0L Mustangs from the
1986-93 era versus the Mass Air (MAF) produced cars...

1989, all production 5.0L Mustangs' Speed Density systems were replaced with the new Mass Air (MAF)
systems. Many of the 1989 5-speed cars were equipped with the very popular and sout after A9L computers.
Many junkyards and passenger kick panels searched in the 1990s in search of A9L treasure by Mustangs
Tuners and Hot Rodders. The A9L is reported to have a much more aggressive timing and spark curve than
other processors, and can handle serious modifications thrown at it without chip tuning...

1990-92 5.0L Mustangs saw little changes through these years besides the introduction of the popular Pony
rims... but on the other side of the PonyCar battlefield, General Motors was raising the bar with an old
performance axle option that in
1990 was turned into a full performance package, codename: G92.
The only chance the Mustang had now was its little stripped down,
few hundred lbs. lighter and quicker than the GT and LX hatch models,
the
5.0L coupe, codename: Notchback!

A special edition  SSP (special service police) model was used by
State Police Departments all over the U.S as highway pursuit vehicles
to chase Hot Rods and Porsche driving drug runners. 15,000 of these
SSP models were produced from 1982-93... They had Heavy Duty
cooling systems (blue silicone hoses) and HD batteries with 130 amp
alternators, heavier Stabilizer bars and 160mph speedometer. The 5.0
engines in the SSP were no different than the Roller Cam, Forged
Pistoned (86-92), multi-port EFI 5.0 engines of the GT and LX models...

1993 was the last of the Fox-body platformed Mustang. Horsepower dropped to 205 HP due to changes in cam
design to make the engine more emissions friendly, and the discontinuation of Forged Pistons. SVT's (special
vehicle team) GT40 equipped Cobra was conservatively rated at 235 HP.
A very limited edition Cobra R
deleted A/C, the stereo and the back seat and added better brakes and a stiffer suspension, for
Road Racing.
With only 107 cars produced, Ford had a competitor for GM's new 1993 powerhouse, the
LT1 powered 5.7L
Camaro Z28, Firebird Formula V8 and Trans Am, but thats another topic on another page...
