| 1998 the new generation III LS1 engine replaces the grunt LT1 small-block in the Camaro and Firebird. The all aluminum LS1 V8 displaced 5.7 liters, similar to the previous-generation small-block, but the cubic-inch measurement differed slightly: 346 for the LS1 vs. the traditional 350 cubic- inch. The 6-bolt mained LS1 motors were simply built for power! Factory rated at a conservative and under-rated 305 horsepower, these engines were actually putting out the same rear wheel horsepower numbers that was advertised as flywheel bhp. Camaro Z28s, Firebird Formula V8s and WS6 Trans Ams all across the U.S were flirting with 12 second 1/4 mile times, in stock form, which had Mustang GT and even SVT Cobra drivers baffled... 1999-02 see even more raised horsepower ratings from GM, making the F-body PonyCars street superstars! Unfortunately GM's focus on more aggressive supercar status lost out sales to the more practical Ford Mustang, and GM closed shop on Camaro and Firebird production... until 2010 that is, with the re-introduction of the Camaro and LS3 powered Camaro SS. But the Firebird, Formula and Trans Am would not make the come back party. The Camaro-Mustang PonyCar wars alive and well again, and better than ever! |
